Interactive event “Things from Grandmother’s chest: a headscarf as a type of Ukrainian women’s headdress”

On December 7, 2023, an interactive event “Things from Grandmother’s chest: a handkerchief as a type of headgear of Ukrainian women” took place in the Art Space of UDHTU. It was prepared by a researcher of the Dnipro National Historical Museum named after D. I. Yavornytskyi Natalia Lysovets.
At the event, students got acquainted in detail with the main types of scarves that existed on the territory of Ukraine in different historical periods, the differences between scarves of local and foreign production, and also revealed the secrets of popular ways of tying scarves in our region.
The master class on tying woolen handkerchiefs was interesting, where students not only participated in the process of creative self-expression, but also learned a lot of interesting things about the technique and symbolism of handkerchiefs in Ukrainian culture.
The art of wearing and tying a scarf in the modern world takes on a new meaning. It is not just an accessory, but an expression of national self-awareness and patriotism. A Ukrainian handkerchief, on a par with a vyshyvanka, becomes not only an element of the wardrobe, but also a kind of talisman that combines the modern world with the age-old traditions of our people.
