USUST joined the educational project “Green – ED”
The Ukrainian State University of Science and Technology has joined the implementation of the educational and educational project “Green – ED. Green Education of the Dnipro”, the purpose of which is to popularize environmental awareness and sustainable development among young people. As part of the initiative, on April 10, 2025, the educational and scientific institute “Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology” organized a number of events for schoolchildren, including a bright chemical show, thematic scientific locations, interactive master classes and demonstrations of experiments. The event brought together more than 100 schoolchildren from 8 lyceums in the city of Dnipro, who enthusiastically watched the spectacular experiments that demonstrated the basics of chemistry through bright reactions, color changes and smoke effects.
The Ukrainian State University of Science and Technology has joined the implementation of the educational project “Green – ED. Green Education of the Dnipro” aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable development among young people. As part of the initiative, on April 10, 2025, at the Ukrainian Educational and Scientific Institute, after the show, the participants were divided into thematic locations, where each had the opportunity to get to know individual areas of chemical science in more depth. Children conducted mini-experiments, participated in master classes and asked questions to scientists. Topics included ecochemistry, nanotechnology, food chemistry and elements of biochemistry:
- EcoArt – creating decor from gypsum. Students immersed themselves in the world of creativity and science, painting gypsum figures with bright colors. During the lesson, they not only showed their imagination, but also got acquainted with the main properties of gypsum binder. Schoolchildren studied how gypsum changes its state during the hardening process, and investigated its strength and porosity. The combination of art and research work made the lesson interesting, informative and inspiring. This learning format helps to better understand materials and opens up new opportunities for creative development!
- Renewable energy sources are the key to an ecological future. In the laboratory, we got acquainted with various non-traditional energy sources, made sure of their environmental friendliness, relevance and productivity. We tested various rotors of wind turbines, calculated the efficiency of a photovoltaic battery, its payback period and annual cash profit from using a wind and solar mini-power station in everyday life.
- Structures of higher plants for biotechnological needs. Understanding the structure of various higher plants is the basis of biotechnological innovation. Thus, the flowers of plants can be a source of a number of substances. They can be used as the basis for psychological support in biological compositions (floristry). In turn, mosses, which are sometimes underestimated, can become a building material or a source of hair and fabric dye. They can also be used as an alternative source of cellulose in the paper production process. This is exactly the understanding of the new use of these structures that the schoolchildren received during the laboratory work. The students also got acquainted in detail with the structure of a flower, as a separate part of a plant, and the entire body of mosses.
- Drinking water quality indicators and modern water treatment methods. During the laboratory work, the schoolchildren measured the organoleptic indicators of drinking water and got acquainted with a modern reverse osmosis installation.
- Quality and safety of food products. During the meeting, the schoolchildren determined the organoleptic and physicochemical indicators of vegetable oils during the laboratory work. They mastered the method of determining the acid and iodine number. Based on the calculated data, a conclusion was made about the good quality of vegetable oils.
- Innovations in the world of cosmetics: ecological cosmetics in Ukraine. In the laboratory work, schoolchildren got acquainted with modern types of cosmetics, tested cosmetics created by students and joined the creative process of creating cosmetic soap with their own hands.
And this is not the whole list.
Such an interactive format allowed students not only to see science in action, but also to feel like real researchers. The event was held in a friendly and informative atmosphere and left many positive impressions. State Chemical and Technological University” organized a number of events for schoolchildren, including a bright chemical show, thematic scientific locations, interactive master classes and demonstrations of experiments.
