Round table “Safe drinking water in Ukraine: access to information about water quality and water treatment methods”
As part of the implementation of the international project, the co-executor of which is the Department of Inorganic Substances Technology and Ecology of the National Research Institute of Ukraine, the Public Association “All-Ukrainian Water Society “WaterNet” organized and held a round table in Kyiv on October 9, 2024, in which leading specialists of Ukraine in the water industry. The head of the department of technology of inorganic substances and ecology, professor Ihor Kovalenko, represented the NNI of UDHTU.
The round table was devoted to the results of the implementation of the international project “Safe drinking water in Ukraine: access to information about water quality and water treatment methods”, which was financed by the Finnish Fund for Local Cooperation of the Embassy of Finland in Ukraine ( Suomenseurlähetystö Kiova – Embassy of Finland in Kyiv) and lasted from 2022 to 2024.
The executors of this project from USUNT were all the employees of the Department of TNR and E, who took part in the implementation of the informational and educational component of the project in the direction of “Modern methods of water treatment”. As part of the project, the teachers mastered the online course for teachers of water disciplines and specialists in the field “Modern methods of water treatment: theoretical principles and teaching methodology”, and the students – the theoretical and laboratory-practical online course ” New technologies of water treatment”, developed by specialists of the department of technology of inorganic substances, water treatment, “Center of modern water technologies” and laboratory of ion exchange and adsorption of NTUU “KPI named after Igor Sikorsky”. The elements of the course were implemented in the educational components of the educational programs of the first and second levels of education, which are implemented at the TNRtaE department, in the specialties G 1(161) chemical technologies and engineering and E2 (101) ecology strong>. The results of the implementation of the course “Newest methods of water treatment” in the educational process were also presented at the round table by other specialized universities: National University of Water Management and Nature Management – head. Department of Water Supply, Drainage and Drilling, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Prof. Martynov S.Yu. and National University “Lviv Polytechnic” – head. Department of Chemistry and Technology of Inorganic Substances, Ph.D., prof. Sign Z.O.
However, the main component of the project was “Monitoring of the quality of drinking water in Ukraine and the development of a new Water Quality Map”, which is available in online format on the website of the NGO “WaterNet”. The results of the colossal experimental work on the selection and analysis of drinking water according to the main quality indicators were made public at the round table. The water quality map is the only Ukrainian drinking water quality monitoring project “in the tap” of Ukrainians. Samples were taken from various points of drinking water supply (aqueduct, well, well) in the controlled territory of Ukraine.
Participants of the round table were greeted by: Doctor of Technical Sciences, Prof. T.S. Mitchenko, president of the NGO “WaterNet”; Karita Laisi, head of the cooperation department of the Embassy of Finland in Ukraine; Ph.D., prof. O.V. Linyucheva, dean of the chemical and technological faculty of NTUU «KPI named after Igor Sikorsky”.
With extremely interesting reports, which caused a lively discussion, debates and made it possible to form new proposals, the following spoke:

- “Water quality monitoring for the implementation of the updated EU Directive on drinking water” – H.M. Tsvetkova, member of the Committee for Compliance with the Protocol on Water and Health, director of the NGO “Women’s Water Partnership – Ukraine”;
- “The Finnish model of water security” – Jani Harkki, CEO of VesiotecOy, Chairman of the Board of the Finnish Water Forum;
- “Use of project results”:
- water canal specialists – V.Ya. Kobilyanskyi, Ukrainian Association of Water Supply and Sewerage Enterprises “Ukrvodokanalekologia”;
- water treatment specialists – Gudym N., project manager of the research and development department of NVO Ekosoft LLC.

Representatives of “UNICEF Ukraine” present at the round table took an active part in the discussion, the developers of the State Sanitation Code “Safety indicators and separate indicators of the quality of drinking water in conditions of martial law and emergency situations of a different nature”, representatives of specialized health centers.
Implementation of this project made it possible to draw attention to the problems of safe drinking water in Ukraine, the introduction of modern methods of water treatment and wastewater treatment, overcoming the water crisis and reducing the negative impact on the environment, training high-quality specialists in the field of water treatment and wastewater treatment.
