Principles of green chemistry for students of gymnasium No. 44 within the framework of the projectGREEN-ED. Green Education of the Dnipro

The Educational and Scientific Institute “Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology” of USUST continues to implement the educational project “GREEN-ED. Green Education of the Dnipro”, aimed at forming an ecological culture of youth, introducing the principles of sustainable development into the educational space of the city, and involving students in modern science and research activities.

On February 20, 2026, within the framework of the project, students of Dnipro Gymnasium No. 44 were introduced to the activities of the Department of Chemical Technologies of Ceramics, Glass, and Biomedical Materials of the NNI of UDUNT. The central theme of the event was green chemistry – a modern philosophy of scientific research and technological solutions aimed at reducing the impact of production on the environment.

The class was conducted by Associate Professor of the Department Svitlana Naumenko together with colleagues. In an accessible format, the key principles of green chemistry were presented to schoolchildren: waste minimization, chemical process safety, resource efficiency, energy efficiency, and the creation of materials with a minimal environmental footprint. Students learned how these approaches are applied in the production of ceramic, glass, and construction materials, as well as in the development of modern biomedical materials based on environmentally friendly raw materials.

Of particular interest was the practical part of the event – laboratory work “Production, determination of the main physicochemical characteristics of gypsum binders and decoration of products based on them”. Under the guidance of teachers, students prepared gypsum mixtures themselves, determined their properties, analyzed the hardening processes and created decorative products. During the work, it was emphasized that even traditional materials can comply with the principles of green chemistry provided that the composition is optimized, energy consumption is reduced and safe components are used.

The event became a clear example of the combination of education, science and environmental responsibility. Such initiatives within the framework of the project “GREEN-ED. Green Education of the Dnipro” contribute to the formation of awareness among students that the future of technology lies in innovations that harmoniously combine scientific progress and environmental care.
