A bright memory of scientist Anatoly Alpatov, who dedicated his life to the development of space science

On the occasion of Cosmonautics Day, SEI USUCT honors the memory of Anatolii Petrovych Alpatov, a renowned Ukrainian scientist whose work was closely associated with the development of technical mechanics, systems analysis, and control of complex dynamic systems. The scientist passed away on March 13, 2026, leaving behind a significant scientific legacy and a strong academic school.

Anatolii Alpatov headed for many years the Department of Systems Analysis and Control Problems at the Institute of Technical Mechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the State Space Agency of Ukraine. His research interests covered a wide range of complex challenges related to space systems, motion of objects in space, and the issue of space debris — a topic that is becoming increasingly relevant each year.

From 1999 to 2020, Anatolii Petrovych worked at the Ukrainian State Chemical-Technology University, where he headed the Department of Specialized Computer Systems (now the Department of Computer-Integrated Technologies and Robotics). It was here that he combined profound scientific work with the training of specialists, passing on to students not only knowledge but also a culture of engineering thinking.

His professional path was marked by outstanding achievements. Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the field of Mechanics. In 2014, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Astronautics. The scientist was also an Honorary Professor of Harbin Institute of Technology and a Consulting Professor at Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an, which reflects his high level of international recognition.

Anatolii Alpatov actively contributed to addressing global challenges in the space sector. Since 2001, he had been a permanent expert of the working group of the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC), focusing on space safety issues.

The scientist’s academic output includes over 300 publications, among them 18 monographs, as well as more than 35 patents and author’s certificates. His research was published in leading international and national scientific journals, including Acta Astronautica, “Applied Mechanics”, and “Space Science and Technology”. Some of his works were carried out independently, demonstrating the depth of his scientific thinking and his ability to formulate and solve complex problems on his own.

A separate chapter of his activity was devoted to the development of educational fields. From 1990 to 1997, he founded and headed the Department of Medical Cybernetics and Computer Engineering at the Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Academy, laying the foundation for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of medicine and information technologies.

His scientific and pedagogical work represents a holistic approach to science, where fundamental research is combined with practical solutions and the training of a new generation of specialists. For colleagues and students, he remained not only an authoritative scholar but also a mentor who knew how to support, guide, and inspire.

The bright memory of Anatolii Petrovych Alpatov will live on in his scientific works, in the achievements of his students, and in the continued development of the fields to which he devoted his life.
