Representatives of the SEI USUCT USUST among the participants of the international forum ReThink Waste in Lviv
On October 2–3, 2025, the ReThink Waste international forum was held in Lviv, dedicated to modern approaches to household waste management, the formation of a culture of resource reuse and the implementation of the principles of the circular economy. The event brought together over 300 participants: representatives of government bodies, municipalities, scientific and educational institutions, business, environmental organizations and international partners.
The Ukrainian State University of Science and Technology was represented at the forum by the Head of the Department of Biotechnology and Life Safety of the SEI USUST Nataliya Mitina and a postgraduate student of the department Volodymyr Malinovsky.
The forum program was full of panel discussions, thematic sessions and practical cases. Key topics included: waste management reform in Ukraine, landfill reduction, development of separate collection and composting, implementation of digital solutions in the field of recycling, community participation in building modern infrastructure, as well as attracting international financing for sustainable eco-projects.
Experts from Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands shared their experience of effective transition to the “zero waste” model and implementation of the policy of extended producer responsibility. Particular attention was paid to legislative changes that open up opportunities for the development of a circular economy in Ukrainian communities.
In addition to the discussions, participants visited the facilities of the LKP “Green City”, where they got acquainted with the work of the reclaimed landfill in Hrybovychy, the city composting station and the construction of a new waste processing plant. It was here that they saw in practice how the Lviv community implements a comprehensive approach to waste management – from sorting to recycling and land restoration.
The participation of USUST representatives in ReThink Waste contributes to the exchange of international experience, the development of professional contacts and the deepening of scientific research in the field of ecology and sustainable development. The acquired knowledge and practices will be used in the educational process and scientific activities of the university.
