Postgraduate student Ivan Borysov of the Department of TNR and E defended his dissertation in specialty 161 Chemical Technologies and Engineering.

On September 2, 2026, at the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technology, a public defense of the dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty 161 Chemical Technologies and Engineering by IVAN BORYSOV, a postgraduate student of the Department of Technology of Inorganic Substances and Ecology of the SEI “Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology” of USUST, was held on the topic “Denitrification and Related Technological Processes in a Biofilter for Decentralized Drinking Water Treatment”.

Academic supervisor – Viktor Gevod, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Technology of Inorganic Substances and Ecology of the SEI “Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology” of USUST.

The dissertation is devoted to the study of processes for the comprehensive purification of water from nitrates, sulfates, hardness salts, and its conditioning in a local POU system. As a result of the work, a prototype of an effective, reliable, and affordable personal water purification device was developed for obtaining high-quality drinking water from decentralized water sources contaminated with nitrates.

Ivan Borysov successfully completed comprehensive training at the Department of Technology of Inorganic Substances and Ecology under the educational programs of the first (Bachelor’s), second (Master’s), and third (Doctor of Philosophy) educational levels and was an active participant in the international “Water Harmony” programs.

Ivan Borysov’s scientific career began during his studies. In 2018, he received a third-degree diploma at the second round of the All-Ukrainian Competition of Student Research Papers in the specialty “Chemical Technologies and Engineering” for the paper “Development of Innovative Water Purifiers to Provide the Population of Ukraine with High-Quality Drinking Water” under the scientific supervision of Professor Viktor Gevod.

From a student development to dissertation research, the topic of water treatment received consistent scientific development in Ivan Borysov’s work. The open dissertation registry lists a number of publications devoted to bubble-film extraction, sulfate reduction in a denitrifying biofilter, mathematical modeling of processes, reduction of calcium hardness, and the development of a reliable point-of-use water treatment system. Among them is a 2025 article in the journal Green Chemistry Letters and Reviews, which is indexed in Scopus in the Q1 quartile, as well as a 2025 publication in Voprosy Khimii i Khimicheskoi Tekhnologii on a point-of-use water denitrification system.

As a result of the open vote, all five members of the one-time specialized academic council unanimously supported awarding Ivan Oleksandrovych Borysov the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
