Liquidators of the Chernobyl disaster among the teachers of the SEI USUCT
On April 26, 1986, the world was shaken by a tragedy of a planetary scale – an explosion at the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The explosion and a large-scale fire caused the release of radioactive substances, which covered not only the territory of Ukraine, but also many European countries.
Thanks to the self-sacrifice and courage of the liquidators, it was possible to localize the consequences of the accident and stop the further spread of the disaster. Many of those who stood to protect humanity paid for it with their own health and lives. Among such heroes are the teachers of our university, who today work at the Department of Biotechnology and Life Safety of the SEI of the USUCT:
- Olexandr Serhiyovych Matrosov,
- Volodymyr Oleksandr Oleksandrovich Gerasimenko,
- Mykhailo Vasilyevich Rogalov.
On the eve of the anniversary of the accident, the tour guides of the university museum — students of the NNI of the UDCTU Verbytska Maria (f-t X and HT), Lyubarska Darya and Kulyk Anastasia (f-t F and BT) — held a special meeting with Olexandr Serhiyovych Matrosov.
In a warm, sincere interview, Oleksandr Serhiyovych shared his personal memories of those tragic days, his participation in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident, the risks he faced every day, and the cost of saving millions of lives.
Such meetings allow students to experience living history — not from textbooks, but through eyewitness accounts. They foster deep respect for the feat of those who, at the cost of their own lives and health, protected the future.
We sincerely thank our teachers-liquidators for their courage, resilience, and significant contribution to saving humanity. The memory of their feat will live forever.
