Evening in memory of Professor Viktor Ivanovich Markov at the SEI USUCT
On February 2, 2026, a memorial evening was held in the library of the SEI USUCT of the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technology, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding chemist, teacher and founder of a powerful scientific school – Professor Viktor Ivanovich Markov (1936–2023).
The event was opened by Professor Olexandr Kharchenko, who outlined the main milestones of the scientist’s life and scientific path, his contribution to the development of organic and heterocyclic chemistry, as well as his role in the formation of generations of chemists-technologists.
Since 1946, the life of Viktor Ivanovich Markov has been closely connected with the Dnipropetrovsk Institute of Chemical Technology (now – SEI USUCT USUST). In 1959, he graduated from the institute with honors in the specialty “Technology of Basic Organic Synthesis”, defended his candidate’s thesis (1963), and in 1975 – his doctoral thesis on the synthesis, reactions and stereochemistry of small nitrogen-containing heterocycles.
For many years, Viktor Ivanovych headed the Department of Technology of Organic Substances (TOOS), where he developed applied and fundamental research, launched new training courses, opened the specialty “Technology of Pharmaceuticals”, modernized the laboratory base and actively involved students in scientific work.
The professor’s scientific interests included organic and heterocyclic chemistry, the chemistry of N-substituted aziridines, sulfonamides, electrophilic rearrangements of geminal azines and oxazines, the synthesis of biologically active compounds and polymer stabilizers. He is the founder of the scientific direction related to electrophilic rearrangements of heterocyclic systems, and his school has gained recognition in Ukraine and abroad.
Under the leadership of Professor Markov, dozens of candidates and doctors of science have been prepared, more than 400 scientific papers have been published, 89 author’s certificates and 4 patents have been obtained. He underwent scientific internships at Yale University (USA), Liverpool University (Great Britain) and in China, contributing to the integration of Ukrainian science into the world scientific space.
The rector of USUST, Professor Konstantyn Sukhyi, spoke with warm memories of Viktor Ivanovich, emphasizing the international recognition of Professor Markov’s scientific school and his personal qualities – high intelligence, principledness and deep scientific culture.
Professor Konstantin Burmistrov emphasized Viktor Ivanovich’s encyclopedic erudition, the scale of his scientific thinking, and his unique ability to combine fundamental science with practical tasks. The memories of Associate Professor Lyudmila Karpishchenko were touching, as she spoke about Professor Markov’s mentoring role, his support for young scientists, and his personal involvement in the development of their scientific careers.
Professor Vasyl Shtamburg, Associate Professors Vadim Kiselyov, Karolina Yanova, Nikolai Toropin, and other colleagues and students of the scientist also shared their memories. The speeches repeatedly spoke of his deep erudition, humanity, culture of scientific discussion, and ability to inspire students and postgraduates to research.
A separate symbolic accent of the evening was the presence of Professor Markov’s grandchildren as a sign that his memory is preserved not only in the scientific heritage and professional environment, but also in the family.
During the event, participants had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with a thematic exhibition of scientific works, archival materials and publications of Viktor Ivanovich Markov, which clearly demonstrated the scale of his scientific achievements and significance for the development of chemical science and the university.
The figure of Professor Markov remains an important part of the history of the SEI USUCT and a source of inspiration for the current generation of scientists.
